Lindon Shimizu

Lindon Shimizu is a Brazilian-Japanese artist, choreographer, director and performer, born in Porto Alegre, Brazil and raised in Japan. He moved to Joensuu, Finland, in 2015 and has since developed an interdisciplinary practice across contemporary dance, performance, theatre, moving image and somatic practice, alongside teaching in dance and somatics.

His artistic work has developed through collaborations and projects across Brazil, Japan, Finland, Denmark, Spain, Belgium, Sweden, Estonia and Iceland. He has worked both as a performer and increasingly as a choreographer and director, developing practices that move between bodies, cultures, disciplines and forms.

His artistic practice is rooted in questions of migration, belonging, cultural transmission, identity and transformation. He is interested in the dialogue of the ethical-aesthetical-political body as a way of being and creating and in the relationships between liquids and membranes, contents and containers, boundaries and what happens in between.

He refers to this perspective as the “migratory body”: a body shaped by movement between places, languages, cultural frames and ways of being. His current artistic investigation, The Migratory Body — Fluid Identity, explores how cultural identity moves, overlaps and transforms through and from the body.

His recent artistic works include GRASP (2025), BIRONGITAI (2018–2025), Kilpikonnakuningatar (2024), KUKOTAR (2026) and interdisciplinary work through MU&MA. His practice also includes moving image and screendance, with works such as 4:44, 인연 – Bond and Groundless Ground. 4:44 received the Jury Prize at the International Screendance Festival Freiburg and was selected for several international festivals.

His work brings together embodied research, choreography, performance, somatic practice, voice, moving image and interdisciplinary collaboration. He is interested in how experiences carried by the body can become artistic material, and how performance can create spaces for identities that remain fluid, layered and continuously becoming.
