100 gestures – Dani Lima

The result of extensive research on gestures and their role in the formation of subjectivities. Based on the proposal to map the emblematic body movements that built the 20th century, 100 Gestures was developed as a dreamlike inventory of memories inscribed in the bodies of dancers. It moves from the hip swaying of 1950s rock to the electronic communion of raves, from Isadora Duncan to Michael Jackson, from martial elegance to kitsch exaggeration, from modernism to video games, from the individual to the collective, in a kaleidoscope of iconic gestures, everyday actions, intentions, postures and mannerisms. A fragmented and mixed vision of the century's movements, which gains unity in the presence of dancers, coming from different parts of Brazil and the world and with different backgrounds in the field of dance, who enter the stage supported by their own bodily history. The work relies on the heterogeneity of the team to build a chaotic inventory, relying on the processes of memory and dreams, which mix experiences and references based on subjective and often unconscious criteria. 100 Gestures aims to give visibility to the dance, attitudes and behaviors that have marked us in the last 100 years as transformative gestures of the ways of being and acting in the world, in both directions with the historical and social context of each era.
