AFRICA MARU is a new interdisciplinary performance emerging from my investigation into the migratory body and fluid identity.
The work takes its name from the immigration ship my father took from Japan to Brazil in 1933. The ship becomes a spatial and conceptual structure through which departure, arrival, instability, transmission and the search for ground can be experienced.
Movement, voice, sound and image come together through an embodied investigation of migration, labour, memory and cultural transformation.
